Marcel Hircher has already accomplished a lot in PyeongChang.

The Austrian won two gold medals before competing in the slalom on Wednesday. He was trying to become the first man to win three alpine medals at the Winter Games.

He was the favorite going into the first run of the men's slalom, but he lost control just after the start, and his skis left the ground. As he came down, he attempted to correct his line and make it to the gate. He proceeded to skid on the snow and slide by it.

Hircher stopped dead in his tracks as he realized that his chance for another medal had just vanished. It's the first time Hircher has not finished a race in two years. The last time he did not finish was February 14, 2016.

The error opens up the field for the men's slalom. Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen currently leads.
