Tucker HS girls basketball team disqualified from tournament following GHSA investigation

The Georgia High School Association basketball state championship game tip off in Macon at the Macon Centreplex.

TUCKER, Ga. — The Georgia High School Association confirmed Monday that the Tucker High School girls basketball team will have to withdraw from the rest of the state basketball tournament.

The decision, according to officials with the GHSA, comes after an investigation into the team found it to be in violation of GHSA rules regarding recruiting and undue influence. It also found the team had been playing several ineligible players throughout the season.

Last week, 11Alive brought questions to the GHSA about the situation after it was brought to our attention that six players on the team were found to live at addresses listed outside of the school's district. Over the summer, those six players were also part of an elite female basketball league team, coached by Robert Stanard, a parent and booster at Tucker High School. A few months later, the six players were all enrolled at Tucker and playing on the school's girls basketball team.

As a result of Tucker's dismissal, there will be significant changes to the Class AAAAAA girls bracket.

  • The Tucker game against Harrison High School, scheduled for Tuesday, Feb. 27, is canceled.
  • Grovetown High School, which lost to Tucker in the first round, will get the chance to play at Bradwell Institute, who was defeated by Tucker in the second round. That game will be held Wednesday, Feb. 28.
  • The winner of the Grovetown vs. Bradwell game will play against Harrison Thursday, March 1 in a quarterfinal round game. The winner will advance to the semifinals, which will be played as scheduled at West Georgia College on March 3.
  • Times for the rescheduled games will be made by the opposing schools.

DeKalb County School District Superintendent/CEO R. Stephen Green issued a statement saying,“We acknowledge the Georgia High School Association ruling and will uphold the findings and will proceed to hold everyone who was involved accountable.”
