This national problem may keep you from getting a license in Georgia

If you're having trouble at the DMV or getting a driver's license or a title, this might be why.

ATLANTA — Georgia motorists can thank a national glitch for their inability to get a driver's license or a title.

An 11Alive viewer brought the issue to our attention Friday morning and the Georgia Department of Driver Services (DDS) later confirmed some of the details.

According to DDS spokesperson Susan Sports, the state's ability to access the National Driver Registry database experienced a technical issue. As a result, no one in the state was able to get a driver's license while the computers were down.

The system is operated by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). A spokesperson for the organization, Ian Grossman, told 11Alive that the database itself was not down, just the network through which many departments across the country access them.

Sports said the computers came back up by the close of business on Thursday. But, by open of business the next day they were down once again.

However, Grossman said this was actually due to yet another glitch dealing with a separate network and not part of the National Driver Registry problem the previous day.

"Since then, while all state and AAMVA systems were operational, a system that is operated by DHS that states use to verify legal presence has been down," he said.

A section of the state DDS website shows that online services are also limited because of the problem. Right now, there is no estimated time on when the problem will be fixed.
