Driver whose car stalled on I-20 killed after getting out to find help

Police remind the public to remain in their cars when on the interstate and call 911 in emergencies.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A motorist is dead after authorities say he tried to get help when his car stranded him on I-20, Saturday morning.

The crash happened in the eastbound lanes near Fulton Industrial Boulevard around 4:15 a.m. officials with the Fulton County Police Department said.

Authorities said a car had stalled out on I-20 so the driver got out to get help. But in the process, he was hit by another car.

No citations are being filed right now as the investigation continues. However, speed doesn't appear to be a factor. The victim hasn't yet been identified publicly though police said he was a man in his 50s from metro Atlanta.

During the preliminary investigation, traffic was backed up beyond Riverside Parkway, slowing down traffic approaching Six Flags Over Georgia.

The Georgia Department of Transportation reported traffic on the interstate was fully reopened by  8:15 a.m.

Authorities with the Fulton County Police Department took the opportunity to remind motorists to call 911 and stay in their car in most cases until help arrives.
