Ahead of Thanksgiving travel comes good news from GDOT on Ga. 400 progress

The newly reconfigured Georgia 400 southbound ramp to Abernathy Road will open on Monday.

SANDY SPRINGS, Ga. — Sandy Springs commuters who have been struggling through the daily traffic nightmare during the Georgia 400 Restoration Project finally have some good news.

We get one more nugget of progress as the newly reconfigured Georgia 400 southbound ramp to Abernathy Road will open Monday morning. No time has been given but I'd like to think it will open for the morning commute.

The exit itself will begin just past the North Springs MARTA Station heading south on Georgia 400 giving plenty of time to merge into the two right-hand lanes. Bridgework will continue around Abernathy Road and Georgia 400, but this is a welcomed sign for a project that has seen its fair share of delays.

In October, we saw the opening of the 80-foot-high flyover ramp from Georgia 400 southbound to I-285 eastbound. And, in another sign of progress, we can add the opening of the I-285 westbound ramp from Ashford Dunwoody also scheduled for Monday.

Later in December come two more ramp openings - the Georgia 400 southbound ramp to I-285 westbound and I-285 eastbound ramp to Glenridge Drive.

Now, don't expect a sudden disappearance of traffic - there's plenty of work to be done with several ongoing projects slated to run deep into 2021. We've seen major improvements for the Cobb and Cherokee commutes with the installation of Express Lanes and the reconfigured ramps at the Cobb Cloverleaf.

If we can all take a deep breath and keep packing the patience, we can enjoy the little victories. But realize we're in for a long haul until this massive project reveals all it has to offer to ease congestion in the area. For what it's worth I don't just report the traffic - I live it, traveling Georgia 400 each day and I too have put a few dents in my steering wheel.

And expect more holiday happiness from GDOT as they plan to suspend all construction-related interstate lane closures for Thanksgiving travel beginning Wednesday at 5 a.m. until Monday, Nov. 30 at 5 a.m. As a reminder, please watch your speed in all Georgia Department of Transportation work zones whether they seem active or not.
