Two men dead in Downtown Connector wreck

The early morning wreck happened near the Fulton Street interchange

ATLANTA — The southbound lanes of the Downtown Connector were closed briefly early Sunday morning after a double-fatal wreck.

The wreck happened near the Fulton Street interchange at about 2:30 a.m.

According to Atlanta Police Officer Stephanie Brown, the driver of a 2005 Honda Element was driving at a high rate of speed when he lost control, veered off the roadway and struck a tree.

The driver stepped out of the car and collapsed on the roadway. The passenger was belted inside the car.

A Grady EMS crew and an Atlanta Fire crew responded and declared the two men dead at the scene.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office later identified them as 42-year-old Sergio Echeverria and 28-year-old Jose Vazquez, both of Lawrenceville.
