Victim identified after fatal wreck that shut down I-20 ramp to connector

Six people were transported to the hospital in an unknown condition.

ATLANTA - A driver making a u-turn in the middle of I-20 just west of the Downtown Connector early Tuesday morning caused a multi-vehicle wreck, shut down I-20 for more than four hours during the morning rush, and paid for it with his life, according to information released by Atlanta police Tuesday afternoon.

The victim who caused the wreck and died at the scene has been identified as 31-year-old Demetrius Cotton of Atlanta.

A total of six people were transported to the hospital . Police said Tuesday afternoon they are all going to survive.

Traffic was being contraflowed and diverted off at Windsor as investigators were recreating the crash scene.

Just before 3:30 a.m., Atlanta Police say Cotton was driving east on I-20, and started to make a u-turn into the westbound lanes, just west of the Downtown Connector.

Police say while Cotton, driving a 2009 Infiniti M35, was turning around, he and another vehicle, a 2015 Cadillac Escalade collided head-on. The driver of the Escalade, Kyambo Joshua, was injured.

Then a third vehicle, a 2009 Chevrolet HHR, driven by Jerrell Collins, struck the Escalade and then the Infiniti. Collins was also injured.

Investigators were able to interview both Joshua and Collins about what happened.

Cotton was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say that during their investigation of the collisions, they found a large bag of marijuana and two guns at the crash site. A spokesman says, "At this point in our investigation, we have not found any evidence linking the found property to any of the involved parties."

Police say that they do not anticipate filing any charges.
