Power outages, school cancelations linger after Zeta

ATLANTA — Zeta has swept past of metro Atlanta and north Georgia, but the area is still feeling its impact after the storm knocked out power and took down trees.

The storm made landfall Wednesday evening near Louisiana's coast as a hurricane before bringing strong winds and rain to metro Atlanta during the early morning hours on Thursday.

UPDATES:

6:40 p.m. | As of 6:40 p.m., there are still about 510,00 power outages being reported across the state.

4:24 p.m. | EMC said it has restored power to 160,000 customers in metro Atlanta, west and north Georgia following Zeta. This comes after 400,000 outages at the peak of the storm. 

Despite the progress made today and additional work tonight, EMC said complete restorations may extend into Friday, due to the "magnitude of destruction."

2:50 p.m. | Both the Fulton and Cobb county school districts here in metro Atlanta have decided to cancel classes for Friday, Oct. 30. Several other districts in north Georgia have followed suit.

2:35 p.m. | Cherokee County officials released the name of the man who died when a tree fell on his trailer in Acworth as 22-year-old Franklin Whyte. The sheriff's office said "It appears Whyte was lying in bed when the tree struck the mobile home."

1:45 p.m. | Two people were killed when a tree fell on a home in Gwinnett County on Thursday. 11Alive is working to gather more information.

"The tree fell over the bed pinning the occupants. FD Technical Rescue crew members are working to devise a plan to remove the tree and recover the bodies. The medical Examiner has been requested to respond to the scene," Gwinnett Fire & Emergency Services said.

12:55 p.m. | Cobb officials are urging drivers to stay off of the road ways "Traffic is posing hazards to crews and creating additional calls," they said.

11:41 a.m. | Drone video from Cobb County shows a tree down on power lines blocking traffic on Sewell Mill Rd in East Cobb. The whole area is full of roadblocks from busted gas lines, downed power lines and several sections with trees downs.

10:55 a.m. | Some DeKalb County water customers may experience temporary water pressure decreases due to power fluctuations and outages at county pump stations, they said on social media.

9:20 a.m. | The National Weather Service in Peachtree City says Tropical Storm Zeta has exited the area. They said winds will continue to diminish, though a few weakened trees could continue to fall. 

9:05 a.m. | Early voting location at Locust Grove Library in Henry County will delay opening due to power lines down in the area.

9 a.m. | Marietta City Schools cancels all classes, including virtual learning. 

8:40 a.m. | Atlanta Public Schools cancels all virtual classes for Thursday. Charter School families are encouraged to reach out to their schools directly to guidance.

8:25 a.m. | In Clayton County several trees and power lines are blocking roadways. The Clayton County Police Department is posting updates on their Twitter account.

Sweetbriar Trace at Noahs Ark Rd, Hwy 314 and Hwy 138, Hwy 85 westbound on Hwy 138, Hwy 138 westbound and Hwy 138 eastbound, the intersection of Old Rex Morrow Rd at Trammell Rd., the roadway of 2737 Jodeco Dr.,  the intersection of Queen Aliese Lane at King Arthur Ct.

7:45 a.m. | Early Voting in Fulton County is delayed at the following locations "Ponce de Leon Library, Wolf Creek Library, Adams Park Library, Chastain Park, East Roswell Library, Helene Mills Senior Center, Milton Library, Etris Community Center, Milton Library"

7:40 a.m. | Early Voting in Cobb County is delayed until 10:00 a.m.

"However, be advised power issues at some locations could delay opening further," the county said. 

7:27 a.m. | More than one million Georgians are without power across the state between Georgia Power and Georgia EMC. This is what Georgia Power said their plans were for getting power restored once the storm moved through.

7:26 a.m. | Dawson County opens shelter for residents. 

"There are downed trees and power lines throughout the county. Power is out for approximately 75% of Dawson County. Rock Creek Park’s emergency shelter will open at 7 am. We have crews out working vigorously to clear trees and roadways. We appreciate everyone’s patience while Hurricane Zeta makes her way across Dawson County. Please remain weather aware and stay safe."

7:25 a.m. | "Cobb DOT crews are responding to 150 tree calls and have pulled in crews from the Water and PARKS Departments to assist in the cleanup.  Cobb Firefighters handled multiple rescues from trees that fell into houses or on cars, and Cobb Police are dealing with multiple intersections without working stoplights."

7:20 a.m. | Atlanta Firefighters rescued a man from a three-story home on Brookdale Dr NW. He was "pinned between tree, bed, and floor due to a large tree falling into bedroom," according to Sgt. Cortez Stafford. The man suffered injuries described as minor and was taken to the hospital.

7:01 a.m. | A man died in his home in Cherokee County after a tree fell. It happened in the Eastgate community off Bells Ferry Road.

6:55 a.m. | Forsyth County Sheriff's Office is posting closed roads on Twitter.

6:50 a.m. | Rockdale County is delaying early voting until 10:30 a.m. on Thursday

6:30 a.m. | More than a half million Georgia power customers in metro Atlanta and North Georgia are without power. About 350,000 Georgia EMC customers are without power statewide.

6:10 a.m. | Alpharetta Police posted this picture of a tree across Clubhouse Dr.

6:00 a.m. | Clark County Schools announce all buildings will be closed Thursday. More school closings, here. 

5:56 a.m. | 460,000+ Georgia Power customers without power in metro Atlanta and North Georgia. 261,000+ Georgia EMC customers without power across the state.

5:47 a.m. | Cobb County issues a notice about dangerous conditions throughout the county.

5:35 a.m. | A tree is down and blocking lanes on I-20 WB at MLK. HERO units are on the scene and working to clear.

5:30 a.m. | Several roads in Brookhaven are blocked.

5:23 a.m. | More than 300,000 Georgia Power customer are without power right now in metro Atlanta and North Georgia. More than 145,000 Georgia EMC customers are without power statewide.

5:10 a.m. | 11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil notes that as the heavy rains move out of the area, they're going to be tailed by the center of the storm which will bring the strongest winds we've seen yet. That's what you can expect to see over the next little while.

5 a.m. | The most recent advisory which just came out places the storm about 65 miles north-northwest of Atlanta.

5 a.m.: | The National Hurricane Center's latest advisory notes: "Strong, damaging wind gusts, which could cause tree damage and power outages, will continue to spread well inland across portions of northeastern Alabama, northern Georgia, the Carolinas, and southeastern Virginia today due to Zeta's fast forward speed. Wind gusts could be especially severe across the southern Appalachian Mountains."

4:50 a.m. | Outages coming in waves now - Georgia Power now reporting 183,580 total customers affected.

4:45 a.m. | Georgia EMC is reporting 45,804 for their customers statewide, including nearly 20,000 in metro Atlanta.

4:40 a.m. | Already a lot of reports of trees and wires down, with the strongest winds still on their way from Alabama.

4:21 a.m. | Georgia Power is reporting about 65,000 customers are affected by power outages in North Georgia and metro Atlanta.

4:00 a.m. | Wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph are reported in West Georgia and metro Atlanta.
