Rain, storm surges rage across Tybee Island

Rain finally made it to Tybee Island from Hurricane Irma on Sunday morning and likely won't stop until Tuesday.

Rain finally made it to Tybee Island from Hurricane Irma on Sunday morning and likely won't stop until Tuesday.

Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive late Sunday night and last for about 16 hours.

The biggest concern is storm surge.

Early on Sunday, it was in the range of 4 to 6 feet. Forecasters say it could be worse here than on Florida’s east coast because the shallow water extend so far off this island compared to Florida’s deepwater coast.

That’s why state officials are telling residents to evacuate by 8 pm Sunday night or it will likely soon to become too dangerous. Officials are also imposing a curfew beginning at 10 pm Sunday night.

Law enforcement personnel are staying on the island to make sure that curfew is obeyed.
