ATLANTA -- Metro Atlanta and much of west and northwest Georgia is in a Marginal Risk area for severe weather on Thursday -- just in time for opening day for the Atlanta Braves.
11Alive Meteorologist Chesley McNeil says the primary risk will include high winds, heavy rains, hail and vivid lightning in scattered severe thunderstorms late Thursday afternoon and evening.
While the Moderate Risk area covers a significant area of Georgia, a Slight Risk area covers areas to our west in Alabama.
TIMELINE
High temperatures on Thursday are expected to be in the low to mid-70s ahead of the possible storms.
Thursday morning
Chesley says that most of the day is expected to remain dry on Thursday. In the early morning hours, storms are expected to be primarily in Alabama.
Midday Thursday
By midday, showers and thunderstorms will begin to move into far northwest Georgia clouds begin to drift over the metro area.
Thursday evening
Late in the day and into the evening hours, showers and thunderstorms will begin to spread through the metro area, with heavier storms beginning to move through the area.
Chesley says any storms that move through have the potential to become severe with high winds, heavy rains, hail and vivid lightning.
Temperatures at the time of the 4:10 pm First Pitch against the Philadelphia Phillies at SunTrust Park are expected to be about 71 degrees under cloudy skies.
Friday, and into the weekend, temperatures will be only slightly cooler with seasonal highs in the upper 60s with sunny skies.
