National Weather Service confirms EF-1 tornado touched down in Covington

Covington Police reported damage to an area homeless shelter and at least one minor injury after storms rolled through.

COVINGTON, Ga. — A representative with the National Weather Service confirmed that a tornado touched down in Covington on Saturday.

Keith Stellman with the NWS told 11Alive that after reviewing video, and surveying the area, they can confirm an EF-1 tornado did in fact touch down at around 4:40 p.m.

The NWS said it tracked from the intersection of Washington Street SW and Walker Bend Parkway to Woodhaven Drive along its 1.43-mile path. 

Covington Police reported damage to an area homeless shelter and at least one minor injury. Heavy damage was seen at Rainbow Community Shelter on Turner Lake Road. 

Pastor Clara Lett, executive director of the shelter said 12 people were inside the shelter at the time the tornado ripped through. One man was injured, but Lett said he will be OK.

Several warnings were issued throughout the evening as the remnants of Tropical Storm Delta moved through the area.
