Damaging winds knock down trees in metro Atlanta

Here are the latest updates.

ATLANTA — North Georgia and metro Atlanta are getting a round of showers and storms Friday. 

Parts of the area can expect to see heavy downpours with damaging winds and hail. There is a possibility of an isolated tornado as the Storm Prediction Center has placed most all of north Georgia in a Level 3 out of 5 risk.

With most of the storms expected between Friday morning into the evening, people should be weather aware heading into Mother's Day weekend.

8:20 p.m. | The tornado watch in north Georgia has expired. The hid wind advisory remains in effect for dozens of counties until 9 p.m.

6:01 p.m. | Here is the latest look at the counties under a tornado watch. Some areas have been dropped from the watch before the 8 p.m. expiration time.

5:25 p.m. | Cherokee County deputies said power is back on after a large outage near Hickory Flat and Free Home communities. 

5:05 p.m. | The tornado watch for Fannin, Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties has been canceled.

4:28 p.m. | The tornado watch for Banks, Dawson, Gilmer, Hall and Pickens counties has been canceled.

The watch remains in effect for Fannin, Lumpkin, Towns, Union and White counties until 8 p.m.

3:40 p.m. | Cherokee County deputies are reporting power outages in Hickory Flat to Free Home area. Deputies said drivers should expect major delays near Hickory Flat Highway and East Cherokee Drive.

Avoid the area if possible.  

 

3:36 p.m. | The tornado watch for Upson County has been canceled. 

2:25 p.m. | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Union, Lumpkin and White counties until 2:45 p.m.

2:20 p.m. | A Severe Thunderstorm Warning has been issued for Clay County, N.C. until 2:45 p.m. Clay County is just across the north Georgia border, not far from Hiawassee and Young Harris.

2:10 p.m. | The NWS reports a strong thunderstorm will impact Cherokee, Lumpkin, Dawson and Pickens counties through 2:30 p.m. This is not as serious as a severe thunderstorm warning, but something to keep in mind if you're up in those areas.

1:55 p.m. | Atlanta Fire Rescue responded to a scene on Dalvigney Street NW where a tree fell onto a police vehicle and pulled down wires. Officials said no one was in the car when the incident occurred. 

Video shows the street blocked from the tree. Lines are also down. 

1:40 p.m. | A tornado watch has been issued for several counties in north and northeast Georgia, including Banks, Catoosa, Dawson, Elbert, Fannin, Franklin, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Hart, Lumpkin, Murray, Pickens, Rabun, Towns, Union, White and Whitfield.

1:15 p.m. | A tornado watch has been issued for Upson County.

11:50 a.m. | Conditions continue to develop around the metro area for afternoon storms, though it looks like it could get more serious in the southern part of the state.

11:20 a.m. | Currently the severe weather hasn't really moved in, though conditions are developing for it.

10:20 a.m. | We've seen some rain already roll through, but we're looking for the real strong stuff to start materializing around 11 a.m.

8:30 a.m. | Anticipating severe weather, Georgia Tech has adjusted the start time for Friday's commencement ceremonies. The Ph.D ceremony was scheduled for 8 a.m., and the master's ceremony's start time was anticipated for 4 p.m. Details on scheduled changes can be found here.
