NEW YORK -- Well, this was bound to happen.
Monday's Met Gala honored Comme des Garçons designer Rei Kawakubo, famous for her avant-garde designs that blur the lines between art and fashion. And considering that the night's celebrity attendees were expected to honor the boundary-pushing designer with their red carpet fashion, some sartorial missteps were inevitable.
Yet, many of the evening's most disappointing looks came not from celebrities who went too far with their fashion choices, but from those who didn't try to follow the theme. Specifically, the looks from the Jenners and Hadids missed the mark, showing the young fashion darlings ignoring the gala's directive to honor Kawakubo's innovative designs, and sticking to their barely-there red carpet wardrobes.

At an event where plenty of her peers made risky outfit choices to stick to the evening's theme, both Kendall and Kylie Jenner opted for their usual naked-dress formalwear. The event celebrated one of fashion's most boundary-breaking figures, so to see Kendall, one of her industry's fastest-rising young stars, opt for a dress from lingerie brand La Perla was a missed opportunity.
And while Rihanna's sequined thong at the 2014 CFDA Fashion Awards inspired a generation of naked dresses, Jenner's black undergarments, which she similarly let show through her gown, didn't channel Rih as much as Rose McGowan's deeply unfortunate look at the 1998 VMAs.
Bella had the more talked-about and exciting look of the Hadid sisters with her see-through, sequined Alexander Wang jumpsuit, with the designer declaring that the young model is the "body of a generation" on the carpet.
But her sister Gigi's French maid-channeling Tommy Hilfiger ensemble featuring an asymmetrical nude dress paired with thigh-high fishnets missed the mark.
When the rapper shows up at red-carpet events, he's normally smoking illegal substances while wearing some sort of questionable suit, and Met Gala was no different. But Wiz's Thom Browne white suit jacket with cartoonish black piping and matching boots were enough of a crime without the drug use included.
This was not Mandy's night. The actress's Michael Kors dress attempted an optical illusion with asymmetrical sleeves and black glove that didn't quite work. Combined with mismatched earrings and unflattering lavender eyeshadow and the whole thing was off.
At least she went for it. Newton's Monse drawstring red dress studded with Swarovski crystals could've used a little less ruching, but the real problem was with the giant flower she wore on her head, which looked more like a Kentucky Derby hat than a high-fashion headpiece.
Johnson seemingly attempted to honor Kawakubo's love of voluminous garments with her goth Gucci look. Unfortunately, the ruffles around her face were more of a distraction than showpiece.
Props to Delevingne's bold fashion choices, showing the young actress/model attempting a daring, silver Chanel suit while her peers played it safe. However, considering that her next project is the intergalactic action movie Valerian, her silver-painted head looked a little too sci-fi.
