BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (Battle Creek Enquirer)-- The father of singer Mary J. Blige was critically injured Thursday morning on Battle Creek's south side, stabbed in the neck in what police said was a domestic dispute with his former girlfriend.
Thomas Blige, 63, remained in critical condition Thursday afternoon, Battle Creek police said. Police confirmed that Thomas Blige is the singer's father.
Police said they have arrested his former girlfriend on a charge of assault with intent to murder.
Police said they were called to the Arbors of Battle Creek, an apartment complex at Rambling Road and Capital Avenue Southwest, at 6:58 a.m. Thursday.
They said they found Blige in his apartment at 200 Oakbrook Boulevard with three stab wounds, including one to his neck.
He was taken to Bronson Battle Creek and then to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo where he underwent surgery for his injuries.
The Kalamazoo hospital said Thursday afternoon it had no information on his condition.
Detective Sgt. Jim Martens said officers went to the scene and found blood in the snow near the entrance drive to the apartment complex and more blood in Blige's apartment. Police also found a knife in the apartment that they believe was used in the attack.
Martens said officers then went to her nearby apartment at the Arbors and found the woman in blood-spattered clothing.
She was taken into custody, taken to Bronson Battle Creek for treatment of a cut, questioned by detectives and arrested.
The woman was taken to the Calhoun County jail and was expected to be arraigned Friday in Calhoun County District Court.
Martens said police believe Blige saw the woman deflating the tires on his Ford SUV in the parking lot outside the apartment and went out to confront her.
The couple argued and Blige was stabbed.
He returned to his apartment and she went to her apartment, police said. She was arrested without incident.
Martens said police have handled seven domestic violence complaints between Blige and his 50-year-old former girlfriend since August.
The woman was charged in October with aggravated domestic violence after she hit Blige in the head with a glass candlestick. She entered a no-contest plea to the charge and on Jan. 10 was placed on six months probation. She was ordered to have "non-assaultive" contact with Blige.
The R&B singer/songwriter Mary J. Blige has sold over 50 million albums since her debut in 1992. Her first album, "Whats the 411," went multi-platinum and the 43-year-old has had seven other albums follow suit.
The Grammy award winner has topped the Billboard charts with songs like "Real Love" in 1992, "No More Drama" in 2001 and "Family Affair" in 2001. Her 10th album, "My Life II...The Journey Continues (Act 1)," was released in November 2011; she released "A Mary Christmas" in the fall of 2013.
Thomas Blige has lived in the Battle Creek area for more than a decade. A biography of Mary J. Blige by the Biography Channel said the future singer and her mother moved to a public housing project in Yonkers, N.Y., to escape abuse by her father, who left the family when she was 4 but occasionally returned.
