Reed predicts Atlanta will surpass New York as movie production hub

Within the next two years, we'll move into second place, Reed said.

ATLANTA - 'The Fate of the Furious' is the current king of the box office. Filmed in Atlanta, the movie has already hauled in more than $100 million.

It's the latest in a long line of cinematic gold produced in metro Atlanta.

On Thursday, Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed touted that success and made a bold prediction.

"Georgia's film and television industry is now third in the United States of America, behind Los Angeles and New York, and we're number five in the world," Reed said. "I'm confident that within the next two years, we will overtake New York City for second place."

The production company for 'The Fate of the Furious' spent more than $65 million in Georgia during production last year.
