This week Titania Jordan get a sneak peek at what's coming up for this year's GSMA Mobility Live! She sat down with GSMA-North America Director of Marketing Dave Bailey. He explains how the GSMA combined their efforts with the Metro Atlanta Chamber for this year's event and discusses year's biggest mobility trends.

Early this week, Boeing announced that they will close its Macon plant in December.
Officials say employees were notified during a meeting on Monday. The plant makes the fuselages of some of Boeing’s most popular jets. Officials had previously said they planned to expand over the next three years. About 120 people work at the plant right now, down from about 500 in 2015. READ MORE

 

UPS announced the expansion of their morning package delivery to 28 new countries.  The Atlanta-based delivery giant is now offering their express plus service, which guarantees next day delivery to those countries.  UPS says most of that expansion is happening in Europe including Romania, Turkey and Serbia.        The company is already planning to invest two-billion dollars in the next few years to expand service in that region. A Georgia Tech graduate is now in orbit aboard the international space station. Shane Kimbrough launched from Kazakhstan early Wednesday morning on the Soyuz rocket.  He'll be conducting experiments on how the body functions in microgravity aboard the ISS during the four-month mission.
He's also scheduled to take two space walks in January.  This is Kimbrough's second space flight. He flew aboard the shuttle Endeavour on a 16-day mission back in 2008. Kimbrough grew up in Smyrna and received a master's degree from Tech after graduating from West Point. READ MORE

 

And Keysight technologies has officially opened their new software design center at tech square. The $14 million center is expected to create more than 200 software engineering jobs. Keysight manufactures testing and measurement equipment and software and says the quality of the students coming from Georgia Tech's computer science and engineering programs was a major factor in bringing the new design center to midtown. Digital consulting firm Bluetube is now property of Perficient incorporated out of St. Louis. The Atlanta business chronicle reports that the acquisition of Atlanta-based Bluetube will help expand Perficient's reach in the southeast and products in the digital space, creative services and marketing expertise.
Bluetube's customers include Home Depot, Turner Broadcasting and Kimberly Clark. READ MORE
 

And Hi-Rez gaming studios, the state's largest online game developer and maker of the hugely popular SMITE multi-player game, is planning to get even bigger, with about 75 new hires.  Our partners at the Atlanta business chronicle report that Hi-Rez is looking to bring on developers, digital artists, web developers customer service reps and marketers. This week the Technology Association of Georgia recognized the Georgia companies making the best use of technology at the Excalibur awards. This year's event also recognized outgoing tag president Tino Mantella. During Mantella's 12 year tenure, tag has become one of the largest tech trade associations in North America.  In honor of his work, TAG board members gifted him the Tino J. Mantella coding camp for kids. This year’s Excalibur Awards were awarded to the following companies:

  • SMALL COMPANY:  QASymphony
  • LARGE-SIZED COMPANY:  Onepath
  • ENTERPRISE COMPANY:  Cox Automotive
