Upcoming 'Bachelorette' contestant Eric Hill dies

(USA Today) -- Eric Hill, one of the contestants who woos Bachelorette Andi Dorfman in the upcoming season of the dating show, has died. He was 31, reports People.

Us Weekly is reporting that the Brigham Young grad was in a paragliding accident in Utah on Sunday. Apparently his parachute collapsed. Buzzfeed explained Tuesday night who he is and why he was trending, sadly, on the Web.

On Thursday, Hill's sister, Karen Tracy, wrote on Facebook that he had died.

"Eric shared his final journey with us this morning as all his immediate family were able to be at his side when he passed away. Thank you to all of your love and support and prayers and fasting," Karen Tracey wrote. "It was amazing to be with so many of his friends and family yesterday in the hospital who came to express their love for Eric."

Bachelorette broadcaster ABC has not commented on the death and what it will mean for the show, which kicks off Season 14 on May 19. Us says he had already been eliminated by Dorfman.

The producers of The Bachelor franchise issued a statement through Warner Bros.' Robert Pietranton, saying:

"We are deeply saddened to hear about the tragic passing of our friend, Eric Hill. Eric inspired us every day with his passion, his courage and his adventurous spirit, and for that we are very thankful. On behalf of our cast, crew and producers, we send our love, our thoughts and our prayers to Eric's family during this difficult time."

Before joining The Bachelorette, Hill had been on a quest to visit every United Nations-recognized country in the world in just 1,200 days. He had been documenting his journey on his website, GO With Eric: The Global Odyssey, and had visited more than 50 countries.
