Macon couple's prom photo from 1949 goes viral

1949 prom photo of Macon couple goes viral

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but for Arthur and Jane Brook of Macon, their prom portrait holds nearly 70 years of memories.

Arthur Brook continues to carry that picture from 1949 around with him everyday.

He saw some high schoolers out on their prom night recently at Outback Steakhouse in Macon, so he decided to share the photo with them.

"I saw them and I said, 'Let me show you a picture from a prom many years ago,'" Arthur Brook said.

One of the prom goers, Logan Gornik, 18, thought the photo was so "amazing" that she took a picture of it and sent it off in a tweet.

The kids then shared the photo on Twitter, and the Brook's photo from their magical night went viral with nearly 60,000 likes, and 20,000 retweets.

"He comes up to me and was like, 'Are y'all going to prom?' I said, 'Yes, sir,'" Gornik recalls. "That's really amazing that he still carries that picture."

Judging from the reaction on social media, a lot of people share in Gornik's fascination with the couple's photo.

"I think it's amazing that that many people would want to look at a picture of us," Jane Brook said.

"I think it's just that people are glad that there are people who stay together," Arthur added.

In December, the Brooks will celebrate 65 years of marriage after meeting each other in the 4th grade. A "gallery wall" in their home displays decades of memories together of a life well lived -- together.

"I've always liked pictures to remind me of where I came from," Arthur said. But even more, Gornik said that prom picture represents more than just a memory.

"It really does show you that true love does exist, it just takes patience, but once you find that somebody, you've got that person forever," said Gornik.

The Brook's storybook love will soon be a book. Arthur is currently writing a book about his relationship with Jane so they can share their story with generations to come.
