VILLA RICA, Ga. -- Villa Rica Mayor J. Collins made good on his promise to veto an ordinance passed by the city council restricting behind-the-wheel cell phone use.

Collins says he vetoed the bill because he says he didn't want to turn the city of Villa Rica into a cell-phone speed trap. Collins says the ordinance would have been the first municipal behind-the-wheel cell phone restriction in the state.
Villa Rica's ordinance included a ban on hand-held cell phone use by motorists zipping through town on Interstate 20. Less than three miles of that highway goes through Villa Rica, which is west of Atlanta. Mayor Collins says he would prefer to see the issue addressed statewide instead.
