GRIFFIN, Ga. -- A 5-year-old girl was severely injured by her family dog Wednesday afternoon.
According to Griffin Police, officers arriving at the family's home on Ruth Street saw the pit bull attacking the girl and her grandmother, who was trying to pull the dog off.
"Corporal [Stan] Phillips was forced to shoot and kill the dog to prevent further injuries," Griffin Police Captain Dwayne Jones said in a statement.
The girl was airlifted to a Children's Healthcare of Atlanta hospital for treatment. Her grandmother was treated at the scene. Their names were not released.
The pit bull's remains were taken to Spalding County Animal Shelter to be tested for rabies. Two other family dogs were also taken to the animal shelter.
