Andrew Young and unsung heroes of the Atlanta community were honored Wednesday night at the 27th annual 11Alive Community Service Awards. In a prime-time telecast on 11Alive, Andrew Young, 11 adult volunteers and five youth volunteers were honored for doing extraordinary things in the community. C. Dean Alford has honored for his work with the Miracle League to give children with disabilities a level playing field for softball, both literally and figuratively. "A project like this doesn't happen because of one individual, but because of the efforts of many," said C. Dean Alford at the Community Service Awards. Wes Sarginson co-hosted the event with Brenda Wood. Sarginson brought the audience to tears witth the story of "Mama" Grace Duke. 11Alive's Paul Ossmann helped convey the moving story of Peggy Harvey, who provides comfort and care for young patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital while overcoming her own physical obstacles. "I was afraid they might look at me and say, 'What are you doing here?' You know? I was afraid it would be a negative thing, but it wasn't at all," said Harvey. The 2002 11Alive Community Service Winners will each receive $1,000 to donate to the charity of their choice and a Jefferson Award for Public Service from the American Institute for Public Service. "We are honored that these individuals have allowed us to share their good works through the Community Service Awards,” says Bob Walker, President and General Manager of WXIA-TV. “Each year the stories of these volunteers remind us that our community is in good hands.” Andrew Young Gets Award The Board of Governors Award will go to Andrew Young, for a life of public service, including top positions with the civil rights movement, Ambassador to the United Nations, three terms in the United States House of Representatives; two terms as mayor of Atlanta and co-chairman of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games. He is also a public affairs professor at Georgia State University's Andrew Young School of Policy Studies. Zoo Atlanta Honored 11Alive will also honor the work of Zoo Atlanta, an organization that has become a special friend to families and individuals all over Atlanta. Zoo Atlanta is a place of learning and growing for young people. The 2002 Award Winners C. Dean Alford, who has worked with the Miracle League to assist children with disabilities in leveling the playing field of softball both literally and figuratively. Robert G. Busse, for his support and involvement with Special Olympics Georgia for the past 25 years from recruiting volunteers to leading major gift campaigns. Margaret Deaner, for volunteering with children and adults with speech, hearing, language, and learning disabilities. "Mama" Grace Duke, who has served as a surrogate mother to homeless children since 1970 and has opened a thrift store to bring in almost $1 million dollars to date to benefit those children. Dr. Goodman Espy, who, since 1975, has unselfishly donated his time, financial support, and medical expertise to those less fortunate both here and abroad. Gwendolyn Gilley-Conley, for founding the Metro Atlanta Respite and Developmental Services, Inc., which provides new options to children with developmental disabilities. Peggy Harvey, for providing comfort and care for young patients at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston Hospital while overcoming her own physical obstacles. Ann Webb, whose work for the past 35 years includes touching the lives of the homeless, disabled, and the hungry. Kimball Williams, who works tirelessly to benefit the less fortunate children of metro Atlanta. Dr. David Zelby, for devoting countless hours to the Ben Massell Clinic where he treats indigent patients as a volunteer dentist. Kids Who Care Winners
