Family and friends remember longtime 11Alive journalist, former state senator Steen Miles

ATLANTA -- Family and friends said goodbye, on Saturday, to long time 11Alive journalist and former state senator Ollisteen "Steen" Miles.

Brenda Wood was one of many speakers at the service who gathered to remember Miles's impact on the community. She passed away in late March after a battle with cancer.

Nicknamed "The News Lady," she worked for 11Alive for about 15 years. She later represented DeKalb County's District 43 in the state legislature.

After a career in journalism taking her from South Bend, Ind. to Cincinnati and then Chicago, Miles' journalistic endeavors brought her to Atlanta as the state broadcast editor for United Press International in Atlanta where she served from 1980 to 1984.

Soon after her time there, she joined WXIA-TV and served in various capacities - many behind the scenes - at the station until 1999. She took over as chief media relations officer for MARTA in 2001.
