Holiday for heroes: Thank the troops!

Every eight minutes, the American Red Cross brings help and hope to someone in need in this country. When a military family is facing an emergency, when a neighbor’s house burns down, when a new mom wants to learn CPR or a cancer patient needs a blood transfusion, the Red Cross is there.

Our heroes - members of the military, veterans and their families - receive more than 352,00 services through the American Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces program each year.  This holiday season, you, TOO, can be a hero. Join 11Alive and Montlick and Associates as we support our service men and women through the Red Cross. Even a small gift can go a long way. Together, our donations will provide vital services, from a touch of home and emergency resources, to hospital support and help reconnecting to civilian life.

Join us this holiday season! Find out how your tax-deductible donation in support of our Heroes can help you honor someone on your shopping list.

Sending Care Packages to Troops This Holiday Season

  • Family care packages are always a welcome treat for our deployed service members, especially during the holidays when they are away from home defending our freedoms. Thoughts and acts of kindness from others are also appreciated.
  • Citizens desiring to send care packages, cards and letters to deployed service members are encouraged to identify troops through family and friends. Individuals may also partner with some of the America Supports You homefront groups listed at http://www.operationhomefront.net/ . They have direct contact with many of the servicemembers and units and can tell you about desired items and shipping frequency.

  • Safety and security reasons no longer allow packages to be addressed to "Any Soldier" or to an entire base in general.

The American Red Cross of Georgia is sponsoring a "Holidays for Heroes" campaign to receive and distribute cards of appreciation to service members, veterans and their families in Georgia and abroad. A special P.O. Box address and additional guidance may be found at: http://www.redcross.org/news/article/local/georgia/Send-Holiday-Cards-to-Thank-Military-Vets-Families

Cards must be postmarked no later than Dec. 2, 2016.

  • When thinking of support for our service members, do not forget their families or local veterans. You can show support by helping military families in your community and by remembering the hospitalized veterans in local Veterans Affairs medical centers.
