Middle schooler's afro sets world record

MARYLAND HEIGHTS, MO. - A middle schooler's big hair is getting big recognition.

Tyler Wright, an eighth grader at Pattonville Heights Middle School in Missouri, holds the Guinness world record for "world's largest male afro" and is featured in the 2017 edition of the Guinness book.

Wright started growing out his hair in third grade with the goal of growing a larger afro than his father. By fifth grade, he'd passed up his father and kept growing.

His record-setting afro measures 10 inches in height, 9 inches in width, and 5 feet, 10 inches in circumference.

It's been featured in national media outlets such as the Huffington Post and Univision.

The 2017 edition of Guinness World Records was released worldwide on September 8.
