Returning sailor meets baby son for the first time

CLEVELAND, Texas -- A sailor who was deployed when his wife gave birth got to meet his son for the first time.

Petty Officer Ryan Dodd flew into Houston early Friday morning and held Liam as a family friend took some memorable pictures.

"I was pretty speechless actually," said Petty Officer Dodd. "It was unreal the feeling you get whenever you see your little son you've never met before."

The Cleveland native was in Japan to help in the search for the missing Malaysian flight when Brittany Dodd delivered their son.

"It's just not something that your husband should have to miss," Brittany Dodd told us as she teared up. "But it's part of our life you know what you're getting into but it doesn't make it any easier at all"

Big sister Willow had daddy around when she was born so she didn't understand the fuss when daddy got off the plane in Houston.

"It's like your wedding day almost," Brittany Dodd explained. "It's like your first kiss all over again. It's really emotional."

Even though the second time dad missed Liam's first three months, he seems to have the perfect touch with the new man of the house.

"I've been all about him all day," Dodd said with a smile.

If all goes as planned, there will be no more deployments. Ryan will be around for his most rewarding job as daddy.

The Dodd family is originally from Liberty County. They are currently stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington.
