Thousands offer to donate kidney to Georgia officer

GREENSBORO, Ga. – Thousands of people have offered to help a Georgia family searching for a kidney.

The family of Raleigh Callaway launched a social media campaign to find a donor for the 49-year-old father of three.

The veteran police officer is in need of a new kidney after battling diabetes, hypertension and chronic kidney disease for more than 10 years, according to his family.

After posting pictures with his family and launching the Our Daddy Needs a Kidney Facebook page, more than 2,000 people have contacted Emory University Hospital to see about donating a kidney.

Emory has identified the top 10 matches and they are being screened for the perfect match, the family says.

The community's generosity will likely spread beyond the Callaway family. When Emory contacted other people on Raleigh's list, 83 of them said they would be willing to donate to someone else.

A fundraiser and awareness event for Raleigh and kidney disease is planned for August 16. It's called "Going for Green" and will be held at Anita Carson Middle School from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, click here.
