KENNESAW, Ga. -- Thousands of walkers and runners gathered on Kennesaw State University do their part in trying to put an end to the debilitating Alzheimer's disease.

More than 3,500 people met for the 2016 Walk to End Alzheimer's 3K Saturday morning, an annual event aimed at raising money to fund research for the disease that affects more than 5 million Americans.

11Alive's Bill Liss was there to countdown the race and spoke to several people trying to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer's right here in the state. In Georgia alone, there are more than 130,000 active Alzheimer's cases due to the state's large senior population. And every 66 seconds, a new case is diagnosed.

The goal of this year's event was to raise more than $800,000, and by race time teams had already raised nearly $600,000.

If you still want to donate, you can do so by going to GeorgiaWalk.org.
