Commuter Dude: Gifts from the road

ATLANTA -- Swept away by feelings of holiday generosity, 11Alive's Commuter Dude is revealing a couple of his secret passages around congestion on metro-Atlanta highways.

It won't help you beat traffic entirely, but at times these little-known routes will get your around a crowd.

The first is on the Downtown Connector northbound. If you're traveling from the airport heading toward town, traffic often snarls near Langford Parkway. Commuter Dude has found that if you take exit 243 toward Langford Parkway, you don't actually have to travel onto Langford Parkway. The long ramp will parallel and eventually return you to the Downtown Connector, allowing you to bypass congestion.

In fact, Commuter Dude Jerry Carnes admits he takes that route never every trip just in case there is congestion he doesn't see ahead.

The second "secret" or little-known route involves Spaghetti Junction.

When you're traveling east on I-285, the ramp to I-85 northbound often clogs. There are two lanes that are the most popular for exiting onto I-85 toward Gwinnett County.

Commuter Dude has discovered if you travel to the right of those two lanes toward the exits to I-85 southbound and Chamblee-Tucker Road, there is another single lane that exits to I-85 northbound. It rejoins the other two lanes and often helps you avoid much of a long line.

Happy Holidays from Commuter Dude.
