For children aged 4 to 8 years old, a booster seat can be a life-saver for children who've car seats, but only if it's the right fit.

Choosing the right booster seat is an important decision for parents, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has been rating booster seats since 2008 to help drivers keep their children safe on the roads.

The IIHS released its recommendations for new booster seats this year, and its findings show that 13 out of the 16 new models available on the market received a "best bet" rating. That means they'll provide a good belt fit for typical 4 to 8-year-old children in almost any car, minivan or SUV.

The remaining three booster seats received the "check fit" rating, meaning they have varied results depending on the child's size and vehicle model.

According to the IIHS, only one current seat – the Safety 1st Summit 65 – is rated "Not Recommended." Four others that received a "Not Recommended" rating were discontinued this year.
