Floyd Mayweather's bodyguard shot in front of Buckhead hotel

Police believe that Mayweather was in one of the vehicles during the incident but said he was not inside the SUV where a bodyguard was shot.

ATLANTA - Investigations are underway after a bodyguard of championship boxer Floyd Mayweather was shot in front of the InterContinental Hotel in Buckhead early Monday morning.

At 3 a.m., police were called to the intersection of Peachtree Road and Highland Drive for a shooting.

Three vehicles were driving past the InterContinental Hotel after a night out, according to police. Officials said the three SUVs in Mayweather's entourage were leaving a nearby Waffle House when another SUV drove up and someone fired several shots at Mayweather's lead vehicle.

Police believe that Mayweather was in the second or third vehicle, and said he was not inside the SUV where a bodyguard, Gregory Larosa was shot. Police said the shooter's white SUV -- police do not have a detailed description, yet -- pulled up next them at the intersection and fired several times the SUV in which Larosa was a passenger, striking Larosa in the leg.

Atlanta Police said Larosa told them later he was Mayweather's bodyguard.

After being followed by the assailant for a few minutes, all three of Mayweather's vehicles were able to get away, and they drove Larosa to Grady Memorial Hospital in downtown Atlanta, where he received treatment. Police Larosa was discharged from Grady around 5:30 a.m.

“We’re not exactly sure what happened earlier on in the evening that may have led to this situation, but our investigators are exploring all possibilities," Atlanta Police Officer Donald Hannah said.

Atlanta police said there was no evidence that anyone in Mayweather's SUVs returned gunfire.

Police do believe this was a targeted shooting and this incident is still under investigation.

Mayweather was seen in a Snapchat video posted from the Medusa Lounge located at 3375 Buford Highway NE at around 2:00 a.m., prior to the shooting.

Atlanta police are asking witnesses and tipsters to come forward to help them with a description of the shooter's SUV and to help them identify and catch the shooter.

Several traffic cameras record video at that location, as well as up and down Peachtree Rd. in Buckhead, and Officer Hannah said detectives will be reviewing the video to see if it helps in their investigation.

In addition to many previous major fights - some televised around the world - Mayweather most recently won a decisive victory over UFC fighter Conor McGregor - a fighter now making headlines of his own after a recent video was made public showing him damaging a passenger bus.
