DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - A grand jury indicted a former DeKalb County officer after she allegedly performed fake traffic stops, stole money from drivers and then took the profits to share with drug dealers she was affiliated with.
Lori Monique Johnson, 33, was charged after traffic stops between April 29, 2014, and March 13, 2015, where she allegedly stopped unsuspecting drug dealers, acting as a working DeKalb County officer, and took their money.
Instead of forfeiting the money over to DeKalb PD, she would take the money to drug dealers she was associated with, who would then pay her for her fake traffic stops, according to the DeKalb Co. D.A.'s Office.
Johnson is also accused of responding to another officer’s legitimate traffic stop and stealing money from those motorists, also.
She allegedly acquired more than $150,000 in stolen money.
A joint investigation between the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI lead to Johnson’s initial indictment. She has been charged with violation of the racketeer influenced and corrupt organizations act (RICO) and 13 counts of violation of oath by a public officer. On October 20, 2017, Johnson resigned while under investigation for these violations.
James W. Conroy Chief of Police released the following statement:
“The Reprehensible actions of Ms. Johnson are unacceptable and do not reflect the high standards of the DeKalb County Police Department. Her actions tarnish the reputations and service which is demonstrated by our honorable law enforcement officers each and every day. Trust, transparency, and accountability make up the foundation of our department and corruption will not be tolerated which is reflected by our active participation in the investigation.”
Johnson surrendered to authorities on Thursday, March 29, and has since posted bond.
