Oakland Raiders' Marshawn Lynch sits for US national anthem, rises for Mexico's

Lynch has not stood for the U.S. national anthem so far this season.

Oakland Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch sat on the bench during the playing of the U.S. national anthem and stood for the Mexican national anthem prior to Sunday's game against the New England Patriots.

The Boston Globe posted photos of Lynch, who came out of retirement to playing for Oakland this season, while both anthems were being played.

Lynch has not stood during the national anthem before any game this season, according to The Associated Press.

Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first took a knee during The Star-Spangled Banner last year to protest police brutality and racial inequality, and a number of NFL players have employed similar national-anthem demonstrations before games this season.

Lynch is not the first NFL player to decline to stand during the national anthem before playing on foreign soil this season. Before a game in London between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Baltimore Ravens, roughly a dozen Jaguars players took a knee during the anthem while most of the team locked arms in a demonstration. They stood for God Save the Queen. The actions came on the heels of President Trump's remarks suggesting players who did not stand for the national anthem should be fined or removed from action.

Jaguars president Mark Lamping later apologized for the demonstration, writing in a letter that the organization was "remiss in not fully comprehending the effect of the national anthem demonstration on foreign soil has had on the men and women who have or continue to serve our country."
