Thieves smash windows out of 30+ cars at apartment complex

Marietta Police said a total of 37 cars were hit in the incident.

MARIETTA, Ga. -- Police are trying to find out who broke into more than three dozen cars inside a gated community, Saturday night.

Residents at the Crossing in Marietta say they woke up to windows smashed and car doors left open. Then they realized their neighbors' cars were hit, too. Marietta Police said a total of 37 cars were hit in the incident.

Some of the victims 11Alive spoke to believe the timing so close to the holidays is no coincidence.

"This time of year, things spike. Especially theft," said Alicia Wood, who lives in the complex. "Anything that has to do with making sure they have a good holiday, they don't care. So at this point, it wasn't just one person, and it wasn't overkill. This was a string, and it's going to continue to get worse."

The complex is a gated community and it's still unclear how the thieves got to the cars in the first place. Residents are asking what is going to be done to keep them safe.
