Atlanta Track Club announces winners in Thanksgiving Day races

More than 11,000 runners and walkers took part in Thursday's downtown Turkey Day races.

Thanksgiving Day was a very special day for two runners of the thousands who ran and walked in this year's Atlanta Track Club Half Marathon through the city's downtown streets.

Stella Christoforou, a local student, took the women's half marathon prize in a personal best time of 1:34:25. The men's half marathon title went to Kenyan runner Harrison Kirigwi, who turned in a time of 1:12:12.

“I went in to today with no expectations,” Christoforou said while explaining her mindset heading into the race. “I said ‘I’m just going to have fun and whatever comes out of it comes out of it.’”

“It was a blast. I was talking with other runners,” Christoforou said. “This is the best part, when you truly get to enjoy it.”

“It was very good, but the course was very tough and very hilly,” said Kirigwi.

More than 11,000 runners and walkers took part in the Half Marathon, 5K, Blue Cross Blue Shield One and 50m Dash this year. In the men's 5K, Rob Mullet of the Atlanta Track Club's Elite Team led the way with a winning time of 15:01. Yolanda Ngarambe of the Atlanta Track Club's Elite Team led the field in the women's 5K with a time of 17:05.

In the 5K, Rob Mullett of Atlanta Track Club’s Elite Team was the first person to cross a finish line, with a winning time of 15:01. For Mullett, who competed in the steeplechase at the 2016 Olympic Games for Great Britain, this was a perfect opportunity to test his fitness against some strong competition.

“It was a lot of fun but, oh man, that hurt” said Mullett. “I probably hit the hills early a bit too hard, but I knew there was a downhill finish so I was just hoping they weren’t catching up.”

The races took place under cool, sunny conditions, giving runners and the many volunteers an ideal way to begin their holiday weekend.
