Christian Coleman won his first global gold medal by finishing first in the 60-meter finals at the IAAF World Indoor Championship on Sunday in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Coleman, who attended Our Lady of Mercy in Fayetteville, Georgia, wasn't able to break his world record time of 6.34 that he set in January, but he darted across the finish line to break the championship record set by Maurice Green in 1991.

Coleman's time was 6.37. China's Bingtian Su finished second in 6.42 seconds, and American Ronnie Baker finished in third.

“I don't think I can ever get used to this kind of feeling,” Coleman said to IAAF after the race. “You work so hard and put so much emphasis into running and you'll never get tired of the feeling of winning."

Coleman, 21, continues to make the case for why he should be expected to become the World's Fastest Man. There are still two and a half years until the next Olympics in Tokyo, but Coleman defeated Usain Bolt twice during the last year's World Athletics Championships and is winning more and more medals.

"I have a good chance to lead the sport in the post-Bolt era but like I've told so many others, loads of guys have the talent," he said. "I have to make sure I keep working to stay on top and when I get the opportunity to take gold medals you take them."
