An early own goal by Minnesota United was enough for Atlanta United FC to escape from a frigid Minneapolis with three points and its third straight win on Saturday.

Hector Villalba's shot in the third minute deflected off the crossbar and bounced off Francisco Calvo's leg and into the back of the net.

Atlanta United was on the attack early, but the Loons settled in and controlled the possession battle for most of the game. Atlanta United was constantly defending attacks. Goal keeper Brad Guzan had three saves.

He put his body on the line several times, including in the 67th minute when he rejected Ethan Finlay. His save in the 86th minute was crucial as he stopped Sam Nicholson's shot from the box. Minnesota had 13 total shots compared to Atlanta's five.

The Five Stripes played with 10 men for more than half of the game after defender Leandro Gonzalez-Pierez received a red card after getting two yellows, earning him an ejection. His first came in the opening minute of the game.

But the back line played well after a tough start to the season. They were visibly proud and celebrated after the match when the whistle finally blew after 7-plus minutes of stoppage time.

The 20-degree weather affected Atlanta United physically with several stoppages due to injuries. Michael Parkhurst received a blow to the head from another player in the second half, but he was able to return.

Jeff Larentowicz left the game in the 74th minute after appearing to roll his ankle. He had to be helped off the field. Andrew Wheeler-Omiunu entered the game to make his debut.

It was a struggle compared to Atlanta United's first visit to TCF Bank Stadium last season. Josef Martinez had a hat trick and led Atlanta to its first victory in club history last season, winning 6-1.

Saturday's win was Atlanta United's first road win since July 29, 2017.

Atlanta United is 3-1-0 this season. Minnesota is 2-3-0.
