Driving with snow on your car can be dangerous and here's why

GDOT has a very important message: clean the snow off your car.

ATLANTA – There’s no denying the blanket of snow that fell across Georgia is pretty, but when left on your car it can become dangerous.

GDOT continues to emphasize that if you do not have essential travel needs on Sunday, to remain at home as crews continue to clear downed trees and power lines throughout the day.

However, if you do have the leave for any reason, GDOT has a very important message: clean the snow off your car.

“You need to make sure you are clearing the hood of your car, the trunk of your car, and the roof of your car from any remaining snow or ice,” Natalie Dale with GDOT said.

Dale said even clear and safe roads can become dangerous when cars who have snow piled on top are driving at high speeds. The snow and ice build up on top of the cars becomes a projectile in traffic.

“That’s very dangerous,” Dale said. “It is your duty as a motorist to clear all ice from your car, all snow from your car before you hit the road.”

GDOT urges that drivers be extremely cautious especially neighborhood streets that aren’t most heavily traveled.

“Slow and steady wins the race,” Dale said.
