Try It Before You Buy It: Hot Wheels Car Maker

(WXIA) -- TJ Rush and his brother play with new gadgets all the time, so toys like Hot Wheels cars usually take a backseat.

"We play with Hot Wheels sometimes," TJ says. "My friend, he likes to play with them too."

But they change their tune after taking one look at the Hot Wheels Car Maker. It makes them want to build their own toy cars.

The Hot Wheels Car Maker lets kids create their own vehicles from scratch, turning wax into wheels in a matter of minutes.

TJ and his brother get straight to work. The machine comes with 10 wax sticks; TJ takes a few and drops them into the contraption.

The next step is easy -- to press the button and start it up. Voiced instructions walk the brothers through the process.

In minutes, the mold is ready to cool, but the wait is more than TJ can stand.

"The time it takes is really annoying," he says. "It's like eight to 10 minutes to do the cool, five to seven to heat it up, so almost 20 minutes."

But a moment or so later, the boys have their car. They remove it from the mold and are surprised at the tie-dye monster truck they've created. TJ customizes his new car with stickers and decals.

The Hot Wheels Car Maker is cool, but not cool enough to win over the brothers. They give it a mixed review.
