BOGOTA, Colombia -- Doctors are stepping in to help an 8-month-old baby who weighs more than 40 pounds.
Santiago has a metabolic syndrome that causes progresses weight gain. He also suffers from lung problems and anxiety, according to doctors.
The baby is being subjected to physical therapy programs. His mother, Eunice Fandino, was worried about her child's folds of fat that were hindering his ability to crawl. Without intervention, the baby's condition could cause a heart attack.
"He looks very cute like this, but his health is not very good," Fandino said. "I think he should receive help – treatment – so that he is able to get back to his normal weight."
His weight could also cause a delay in motor development.
Doctors are putting Santiago on a strict diet of vegetables and fruit. They expect to lower his weight to 17 pounds in six months to a year.
