ATLANTA - An Atlanta Police officer has resigned after a fight with another officer at a restaurant.
According to Atlanta Police, the incident happened around 5 a.m. on March 18. Officers Stephen Green and Joseph Tyler were with other officers from the High Intensity Traffic Team at the R. Thomas Restaurant on Peachtree Street NW.
Green and Tyler began arguing over who would be faster in a foot race. At one point, police said that Green said that it appeared that Tyler was becoming upset and then said, “I’m going to punch you in the face.”
Tyler repeated the phrase and told Green that they should take it outside. The two began to brawl before the unit broke it up.
At some point, Tyler allegedly pulled his duty weapon, but no shots were fired.
Green, who joined the department in November 2011, has been “relieved of duty” and is at home with pay as the situation is investigated.
Tyler, who began with the department in November 2012, resigned his position as of March 23.
The case is ongoing and being criminally investigated, police said.
"An administrative investigation into this event has been opened by Office of Professional Standards and is currently ongoing," Atlanta Police spokesperson Elizabeth Espy said. "The Atlanta Police Department takes these allegations very seriously."
