GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. -- Police have issued arrest warrants against a man accused of killing his wife before turning the gun on himself.
According to the Gwinnett County Police Department, 53-year-old Alton Kelly is charged with felony murder and four counts of aggravated assault after he allegedly shot and killed his wife, 45-year-old Melissa Kelly, early Monday.
Police were called to a home on Bridge Walk Drive around 5:40 a.m. after reports of shots fired.
Authorities believe that Alton Kelly shot his wife and then went downstairs in a room occupied by another couple and their son and then shot himself.
Officers found Alton and Melissa Kelly injured with gunshot wounds. Melissa Kelly later died at the hospital. As of Tuesday, Alton Kelly remained in critical condition at Gwinnett Medical Center. Once he's discharged, he'll be taken to Gwinnett County Jail.
Police had been called to the home twice on Saturday. Around 10:30 that night, officers were called for an argument between the caller's husband and brother. Police responded and gave mediation options before leaving. They were told to call 911 again if things got physical.
About an hour later, a woman called 911 whispering saying her husband was arguing with her sister-in-law.
"This is a horrific crime that will have a lasting effect on many members of the Kelly family and the community," Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Michele Pihera said in a statement. "The Kelly family not only lost Melissa, but they also have to cope with Alton being incarcerated for these violent crimes. "
