With one month until votes are counted in the Georgia Primary, a new conducted exclusively for WXIA-TV and V103-FM in Atlanta finds several major points in the Georgia state primary landscape. In the Republican primary for Governor, state Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine is positioned for a runoff against former Secretary of State Karen Handel or Former US Rep. Nathan Deal. On the Democratic side of the ticket, former Gov. Roy Barnes is poised to coast into the November general eleciton by capturing 2/3 of the vote in the July 20 primary.
In the Democratic primary for US Senate, Michael Thurmond is expected to advance to the November election against Republican incumbent Johnny Isakson.
The Democratic primary for Lieutenant Governor appears to show Carol Porter, wife of gubernatoral candidate DuBose Porter, with a 2-to-1 margin over challenger Tricia Carpenter McCracken. The winner in that race will go up against GOP incumbent Casey Cagle in November.
The Republican race for state School Superintent looks like a neck-and-neck race between school system administrator John Barge and school administrator Richard Woods. In the Democratic primary, businessman Joe Martin is well ahead against his challengers, but he could face a runoff after the primary against teacher Brian Westlake or university administrator Beth Farokhi.
SurveyUSA interviewed 3,500 Georgia adults between June 14 and June 17 for the survey. Of those surveyed, 3,009 were registered to vote. And of those who were registered, SurveyUSA said they had been able to determine that 787 either had already voted or planned to vote in the July 20 Republican primary, and 501 had either voted or planned to voe in the Democratic primary on the same date.
Early voting began across the state of Georgia on June 7.
