ATLANTA -- Like most Atlantans, the staff of 11Alive has felt nothing but the deepest sympathy for those who have lost so much as a result of last week's tornadoes and severe thunderstorms.

11Alive is proud to say that it is stepping up, along with hundreds of Georgians, to donate to tornado relief efforts, raising more than $30,000 in one hour.

Friday night, the staff of 11Alive produced a Special Report, Against the Wind, highlighting the tragedy and devastation wrought by the Georgia tornadoes.

During the Special Report and telethon, 11Alive was proud to host volunteers and staffers from the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army. People from those organizations manned a phone bank, taking donations from 11Alive viewers.

Viewers generously donated more than $20,000 to the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

11Alive, through the Gannett Foundation, also pledged to donate $10 (up to $10,000) for every "like" of 11Alive's Facebook page while the special aired.  We're proud to say that we quickly reached our goal and will be donating $5,000 to both the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

11Alive says "thank you" to all of our viewers who stepped with their dollars and their "likes" to raise more than $30,000 total for tornado relief efforts.

Though the special report Against the Wind is over, you can still make your donation.  Just text "REDCROSS" to 90999 to donate $10 to the American Red Cross, or text "GIVE" to 80888 to donate $10 to The Salvation Army.
