NORCROSS, Ga. -- Homeowners facing financial trouble can meet directly with CitiMortgage counselors in Norcross on Monday to try to avoid losing their homes.
The "Road to Recovery" event runs from noon until 7 p.m. at the Hilton Atlanta Northeast Hotel on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
It's free and open to anyone. No appointments are necessary, but homeowners do need to bring mortgage and financial documents to lay out their case.
Mortgage counselors with the nonprofit group CredAbility will also be onsite to help anyone who has a mortgage with another lender.
"First you have to ask for help," said CitiMortgage COO Harold Lewis. "Then you have to stick to the plan."
Lewis said CitiMortgage was able to help 75 percent of the customers who turned out for similar foreclosure prevention events in three other cities.
He said the event is open to anyone who's missed a mortgage payment, anyone at risk of missing a mortgage payment or anyone in the midst of the foreclosure process.
"Citi wants to help," Lewis said. "We also want to make sure homeowners reach out to us and avoid getting scammed."
He said homeowners should avoid "mortgage consultants" or foreclosure services that charge a fee or ask you to sign over a mortgage payment.
