MARIETTA, Ga. -- A Cobb County woman was killed early Saturday evening when her car was crushed by a falling tree.

The victim, 55-year-old Shufen Yang, drove directly into the tree's path on Powers Ferry Road at Saint James Walk, according to Cobb County Police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce. She was killed instantly.

Witnesses say Yang slammed on the brakes of her Honda Accord to try to avoid the tree, but heavy rain and dark conditions likely made it impossible for her to see what was ahead of her until it was too late.

Yang was the second Metro Atlanta resident whose car was struck by a falling tree Saturday. A large oak tree fell at Grandview Avenue and Pharr Road in Buckhead, trapping a woman and crushing several other cars.
