ATLANTA -- Matilda, a three-year-old eastern bongo at Zoo
Atlanta, is expecting her first calf, veterinary teams confirmed Friday.
The calf will be the first for Matilda and her mate, three-year-old Tambo.
Zoo vets don't know the date of conception, but estimate that she will give birth between August and November of this year.
Eastern bongos are among the planet's rarest mammal species. There
are believed to be fewer than 500 in the wild in their native Kenya.
Matilda and Tambo were recommended to breed by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan, which works to maintain a self-sustaining, genetically diverse population in North America.
