LONDON -- As part of the ceremonies marking one year before the opening of the 2012 London Olympics, the 2012 Summer Olympic medals were unveiled.

The medals will be the biggest ever -- coming in at between 375 and 400 grams, 85 millimeters in diameter and seven millimeters thick. In comparison, the Atlanta medals in 1996 were 181 grams in weight, 70 millimeters in diameter and five millimeters thick.

The front of Olympic medals, dating back to the Amsterdam Games of 1928, have shown an image of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. On the 2012 medals, the winged Nike is shown over a track and field stadium -- an image first introduced on the 2004 Athens medals.

The rear of the London medals show the controversial 2012 Games logo over a ribbon representing the River Thames through the middle of London, and a pick-up sticks geometric figure that officials say represents the energy of athletes and a sense of pulling together.

The opening ceremonies for the XXX Olympic Games will take place July 27, 2012, and be aired on NBC and 11Alive.
