Wendie Still and Chauncey Malone hold their baby, Jayden, who died mysteriously on Thursday.
ATLANTA -- The mother of a nine-month-old boy who died mysteriously on Thursday in Southwest Atlanta remains in intensive care at Grady Memorial Hospital.
"I know she's a fighter," said her mother, Wanda Garneaux. "I know she's gonna come out of it. It's hard. But through prayer, we're gonna get through this."
Garneaux is the one who discovered the body of baby Jayden inside the family's apartment on Fulton Street.
According to a family friend, the baby's body was wrapped in a towel on the bathroom counter.
His parents, Wendie Still, 18, and Chauncey Malone, 21, were found unconscious in the bathtub with a toaster plugged in nearby.
Atlanta police believe they tried to commit suicide after Jayden's death.
"I can't even begin to speculate what happened," Garneaux said. "All I know is I came home, and I found them. I immediately lost it."
Garneaux described her daughter as a nurturing, loving mother. She's convinced the baby died of natural causes.
"There's no way my daughter could have done anything to harm Jayden," she said. "I've known Chauncey since he was a little boy, and they both have great spirits."
The medical examiner is still investigating Jayden's death but told family members there were no signs of trauma.
His parents remain at Grady Memorial Hospital.
