LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. -- The founder of Atlanta's popular DragonCon science fiction convention has been arrested in Milford, Connecticut for violating conditions of his bond on child molestation charges in Gwinnett County, authorities said.

Edward Kramer was arrested on Tuesday while staying in a Milford motel room with a 14-year-old boy, Gwinnett County District Attorney Danny Porter said.

"I had no reason to believe that he would stop; I'm surprised it took this long," Porter told 11Alive News on Thursday.

Porter said he got a tip early Tuesday morning that Kramer was in Milford, Connecticut claiming to be the boy's guardian on a movie set.  He contacted Milford police who made the arrest on Wednesday.

Kramer has avoided a Georgia trial with claims of serious health problems, including a painful spinal condition.

But Porter says his tipster told him Kramer had been hiking on trails in Connecticut and not using the cane, wheelchair and oxygen supply he's insisted he needed. "He claims he's a victim of not having a trial, but every time we get him to trial he says, 'I can't physically do it'," Porter said.

"I think one thing that these events seem to show is that he's not telling the truth about that," Porter added.

So far, police in Connecticut have only charged Kramer with misdemeanor reckless child endangerment, but Porter says that investigation continues.

Superior Court Judge Karen Byers signed an order on Wednesday revoking Kramer's bond.

Porter said he has filed papers to extradite Kramer back to Gwinnett County, which could take several weeks.

A statement on the DragonCon Facebook page says Kramer resigned from the convention in 2000 after legal issues and has not had any role in planning activities since then. A similar statement was posted on DragonCon's media relations page, signed by DragonCon director Pat Henry:

Edward Kramer resigned from the Dragon Con Convention in the year 2000 after being indicted on felony charges in Gwinnett County. He has not had any role in Dragon Con planning or activities since that time.

Since 2000 the convention has been managed by three of the other founders. These men have been involved with the convention since the beginning. They are chairman Pat Henry, and board members Dave Cody and Robert Dennis. In that time the convention attendance has grown from less than 10,000 to over 46,000 this past Labor Day.

Kramer was charged 11 years ago in Gwinnett County with child molestation.

Lawyers forestalled a trial by presenting evidence that Kramer couldn't stand trial because of a spinal condition.

Kramer was under house arrest until 2008 when a judge gave him permission to travel.
