MACON, Ga. -- Teachers in Georgia will soon be able to take five-week intensive course on Southern history and culture at Mercer University in Macon.

The new course is funded by a $185,000 federal grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is slated to be offered next summer for 25 English, history, economics, government, geography, art and music teachers.

It will focus on the cotton industry from every angle: production, politics, economics and race. University officials say the aim is to help expand teachers' knowledge of Southern history beyond just the Civil War and the civil rights movement.

Mercer is a private college with more than 8,000 students. It is based in Macon but has major campuses in Atlanta and Savannah.
